Pitkin County Jail Overview

Pitkin County Jail, also called the Pitkin County Detention Facility in county materials, is operated by the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office. It is the primary local facility for adult male and female offenders held in Pitkin County. The county jail page places it immediately behind the courthouse and adjacent to the parking garage in Aspen.

The jail holds lawfully charged pretrial detainees, people committed and sentenced by the courts, and sentenced Colorado Department of Corrections inmates until transfer to DOC. That custody mix means the jail roster is the first place to check after a local arrest, but not the last place to check after a prison sentence or federal transfer.

Pitkin County Jail Population

The official sourced capacity figure in the research is 22 beds from the 2017 Colorado Legislative Council county jail memo. The same 2017 table listed daily population at 16. The Pitkin County Jail staffing plan said the average daily population for the prior 10 years had been less than 16. The current-inmates PDF generated on June 1, 2026 showed total occupancy of 7.

The public roster does not publish a structured pretrial, sentenced, felony, misdemeanor, or demographic breakdown. It shows age and sex, plus a short offense or custody label. For broader jail population data, Colorado's HB19-1297 jail reporting framework and C.R.S. 17-26-118 require more reporting than the public PDF displays.

The official lookup source is the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office current-inmates report. It is a PDF current-bookings report, not a searchable database. The public report shows name, age, sex, booking date, offense, bond, and total occupancy. It does not show mugshots, booking numbers, full charge statutes, housing units, or court dates.

1. Open the current-inmates PDF from the official jail page.
2. Use the PDF viewer's find feature if available, or scan the rows manually.
3. Match by name, age, sex, and booking date because date of birth is not shown.
4. Call 970-920-5331 when the PDF does not confirm the person or current custody status.
5. Use CDOC, BOP, or ICE locators if the person has left county jail custody for another system.

Pitkin County Jail Contact

The jail and sheriff's office share the county public safety address in Aspen. Jail staff are available by phone at all hours, while sheriff records requests are handled through the records department during normal business hours. Call ahead before traveling for bond, mail, video visitation, or records questions because some services have specific hours or current routing caveats.

Pitkin County Jail Design

Pitkin County's jail page gives unusually specific local history. The current jail opened in January 1984 and replaced what the county calls the old cage in the courthouse basement. Bob Braudis, then the Sheriff's Director of Operations, selected a direct-supervision design. The county describes the jail as the first direct-supervision jail of its size in the country when it opened.

Direct supervision shapes the local jail environment. The county describes windows to outside light, carpeted floors to reduce noise, non-institutional furniture, porcelain fixtures, and 65-square-foot cells with windows. Inmates are allowed out of cells from 8:00 a.m. until lockdown at 11:00 p.m., with access to dayrooms, a multipurpose room, reading, television, cards, and interaction under officer supervision.

Pitkin County Jail Intake

Booking and intake are handled locally by jail staff, but Pitkin does not publish a detailed public booking timeline. The staffing plan identifies a booking room with 24-hour camera surveillance. All new inmates are classified using the North Pointe Objective Classification System decision tree. Unless prior in-custody behavior changes the approach, new inmates begin in maximum custody until classification and observation are complete.

The jail page says all new inmates receive intake screening plus further TB and dental testing. Nurse, physician, psychiatric, and other medical services are provided through contracts, and extreme health cases are treated at Aspen Valley Hospital. Suicide evaluation and counseling are available as needed. Inmates receive clothing, bedding, and hygiene supplies, and the jail has been tobacco-free since 1992.

Visiting Pitkin County Jail

Pitkin County Detention Facility does not allow personal contact visits. Video visitation is available during inmate non-lockdown times, including holidays. The inmate is responsible for contacting the visitor and giving available times. Visitors can use Inmate Canteen for remote visits or use the kiosk in the jail lobby.

Visits are monitored, and staff may terminate or temporarily ban users for nudity, safety issues, security violations, or inappropriate conduct.

Pitkin Jail Mail and Money

Money can be deposited through InmateCanteen.com, and the FAQ says cashier's checks or money orders may be mailed. No personal checks are allowed. The county pages did not publish an Inmate Canteen fee table, deposit maximum, commissary order schedule, or spending limit. Confirm the current route before mailing funds because the FAQ has separate money and mail language.

The mail rule is a major Pitkin caveat. The official FAQ says inmate mail must currently be sent through Garfield County Jail mail processing because Pitkin inmates are being housed in Garfield County Jail while the county plans for the future. It lists the mail route as Garfield County Jail, inmate name and booking number, PO Box 30022 PMB 35803, Durham, NC 27702. Because the Pitkin PDF does not show booking numbers, confirm the current booking number and housing route before sending mail.

Bond at Pitkin County Jail

The Pitkin County bond page says the jail uses the eBonds platform for online surety bonds, and all surety bonds must be posted through eBonds effective February 27, 2026. Online credit-card bond payment is available, but it must be paid in full and carries a 2.9 percent processor fee. Online bond funds are treated as defendant funds and are returned to the defendant if all conditions are met.

Jail Administration says bonding for currently incarcerated inmates is completed only from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., seven days a week. The public PDF bond column does not show whether a bond is cash, surety, PR, no-bond, or subject to another hold. Confirm with the court or jail before paying.

Pitkin County Jail Programs

Pitkin County describes the jail mission as safe, secure, and humane, with services that support physical and mental wellness and reintegration. Meals are provided through an agreement with Aspen Valley Hospital Nutritional Services Department. The jail page says the facility is accredited by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. Drug and alcohol therapy groups meet regularly, and the staffing plan mentions outside volunteer programs, gym time, and yoga classes monitored by camera.

Work release is not active as a Pitkin County program. The county work-release page says the local program closed beginning July 1, 2023, and that Garfield County Criminal Justice Services provides work-release services when a sentence order authorizes work release. Community Service / Useful Public Service is handled through Recovery Resources as a sentencing alternative or probation condition.
